RE:

Fortnight For Freedom

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is sponsoring "Fortnight for Freedom," a movement to promote religious freedom in our country. The fortnight runs from June 21,2012 through July 4,2012. The USCCB chose this particular fortnight to begin with the vigil of the feast day of the martyrs, St. John Fischer and st. Thomas More and end with the celebration of the United States' Independence Day. SS. John Fischer and Thomas More exemplified the ideal of staying true to faith and principles in the face of persecution and death. The conclusion of the fortnight marks our country's Independence Day which celebrates the fundamental principles upon which this country was founded - one of the most cherished is religious freedom.

To promote religious liberty - not only for the Catholic Church, but for all- I would like to let you know of some activities the Diocese will be doing and suggest some for your parish. For additional ideas, please visit the Fortnight for Freedom webpage by clicking here

1.

I will preside and preach at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at San Carlos Cathedral on Sunday
July 1, 2012.

2.

We will be sending you a petition to add to the Prayers of the Faithful for the weekend
of July 1,2012.

3.

I also suggest that you have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at least one day
during the Fortnight and invite your parishioners to pray for the religious freedom
rights.

4.

You may begin a Novena of Prayers - possibly the Rosary or other prayers after each
Daily Mass during this period. I am attaching a Prayer you may choose to use.

5.

Lastly, I trust your creativity at the parish level to participate in other ways that would
be more in keeping with your pastoral needs.
