2012 marks the 39th celebration of “Catholic Schools Week”
The Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Monterey will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week January 29-February 5th, 2012. The theme for this year is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.” Schools in the Diocese and across the country will be celebrating with Masses, open houses and activities for students, families, parishioners and the community at large.

We often have our own struggles with room here in the cathedral, but I was very heartened to hear that 18,000 people showed up for Mass at the national shrine in Washington, D.C. to pray as part of the 2012 March for Life. There are some estimates that, in brutally cold weather, numbers approaching half a million came for the March itself. Next year will be the 40th anniversary of Roe v Wade and I am sure the numbers will be even greater.
The Department of Catholic Schools thanks all the students who participated in this year’s Christmas Card Contest for Diocesan Schools. 2011 marks the third year of the contest to design the covers for the Department of Catholic Schools’ Christmas cards. Winners were selected by a panel of Diocesan judges. A $100 Scholarship-in-the-Arts from the Department of Catholic Schools is being credited to each winner's tuition balance at school. “We are grateful to our students for their unique drawings helping us to prepare our hearts to celebrate the joyous Christmas season!” said Kathleen Radecke, Superintendent of Catholic Schools. “Shout to the Lord, all the earth; break out in praise and sing for joy!” Psalm 98:4
