— Special Announcement —
Salinas, CA--On April 14, 2014, Bishop Richard Garcia along with 800 parishioners and clergy from across the four-county Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey came together at Madonna Del Sasso Church Pro Cathedral for the annual Chrism Mass. The special Mass is held during Holy Week in every Catholic Diocese worldwide. During this Mass, Holy Oils used in the Sacramental life of the Church are blessed and consecrated by Bishop Richard Garcia of the Diocese of Monterey. At the end of the Chrism Mass the Holy Oils are brought back to the forty-six parishes, as well as other institutions, for use throughout the year.
On the Chrism Mass Bishop Garcia stated: "It is a joyous occasion for the entire Diocese to come together to celebrate the ministry of our Church. Each time these oils are used throughout the year is a reminder of this Mass. These oils represent the new life that together we share in the sacraments of our Church and in Jesus, our saving Lord."
Deacon William Ditewig, PhD., Director of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Monterey believes that the Chrism Mass is one of the most important celebrations of the year: "It is an act celebrating the communion and unity of the Church in the Diocese of Monterey under the leadership of Bishop Garcia."
